Bucktail—the hair from the tail of a white-tailed deer—is used in fly tying primarily to create buoyant, durable, and lifelike tails, wings, and bodies for streamer and saltwater flies. When wet, its hollow fibers pulsate and maintain a slender, tapered baitfish profile without absorbing excess water.

Primary Uses of Bucktail
  • Streamer Wings and Tails: Mimics small baitfish for trout, bass, pike, and salmon.
  • Saltwater Patterns: Used extensively for bonefish, striped bass, and bluefish flies due to its toughness.
  • Body Material: Wrapped tightly around the hook shank as clipped or twisted fibers to form segmented bodies on nymphs, wet flies, and dry flies.
  • Common Fly Patterns
  • Clouser Minnow: Uses straight tip fibers for a pulsing, jigging minnow profile.
  • Lefty’s Deceiver: Utilizes long bucktail fibers to add bulk and length without fouling the hook.
  • Mickey Finn & Black Nosed Dace: Traditional classic streamer patterns featuring stacked colorful bucktail wings.
